GRAIN ROT Beginner Guide
Short answer: GRAIN ROT is a run-based horror extraction builder. Enter the ruins, break or collect what you need, avoid the Corrupted, and extract before the team loses every useful vessel. The safest first goal is not “go as deep as possible”; it is “return with enough value to understand the loop.”
The four-step loop
- Prepare at the outpost. Decide what you are trying to bring back and who is watching the route.
- Descend. The cursed elevator takes you into shifting underground ruins where the layout and pressure can change between dives.
- Scavenge and manage noise. Furniture and objects are part of the resource loop, but loud actions can expose your position.
- Extract and rebuild. Bring value home, then use the outpost to make the next dive more manageable.
Living Spark versus vessel
Your Spark inhabits a wooden vessel. The vessel is physical, fragile and vulnerable to fire, impacts and the hazards around it. If it breaks, look for a new body instead of standing still in panic. The best vessel is the one that gets you to the next safe decision, not necessarily the first one you see.
What to do in your first ten minutes
- Learn the button that lets you leave a vessel and the button that lets the Spark inhabit another one; the Steam page exposes these controls in its player guidance.
- Stay close enough to recover a teammate, but do not stack every player on the same noisy object.
- Break only what helps the current objective. A resource decision is also a noise decision.
- Leave early if the team has already secured useful material. A failed extraction can erase the value you were carrying.
- Use the players guide before inviting a group so everyone knows the intended co-op size.
Why noise matters
The launch material and beginner coverage frame the Corrupted as the pressure that turns a simple scavenging trip into an extraction problem. Sprinting, smashing and other loud actions should be treated as signals: make the noise, move away from it, and do not assume the room is safe just because the object is broken.
When to leave
Leave when the team has reached its useful haul, when a vessel is failing, or when the route back is still readable. The extraction builder loop rewards a safe return more than a dramatic last room. Once you are comfortable, read how to play for a more deliberate run plan and outpost progression for what to do with successful returns.
