How to Play GRAIN ROT
GRAIN ROT is easiest to understand as a five-beat decision loop: prepare, descend, make value, decide when to leave, rebuild. You are not clearing a conventional level. You are balancing what the team can carry against the rising danger of staying underground.
1. Prepare one simple objective
Before the elevator moves, agree on the run's purpose: gather a material, test a route, rescue a survivor, or bring back enough value to fund the next outpost step. A shared objective stops four players from making four different noise decisions.
2. Use the environment as a resource
The game's official descriptions emphasize interactive furniture and tactical woodworking. Objects are not only decoration: they are part of how the team creates resources and coins. Decide whether an object is worth breaking, processing or leaving alone before making a loud action.
3. Keep a vessel plan
The Spark-and-vessel system means your body is a tool with a failure state. Keep an escape route in mind, notice nearby replacement vessels, and do not spend the last safe body on a low-value room. When a teammate becomes a Spark, use the change to scout and communicate rather than treating that player as removed from the run.
4. Spend noise deliberately
Noise is a budget, even if the game does not show you a literal meter. Break, sprint or fight when the reward justifies the attention, then reposition. A quiet route after a loud action is often more valuable than another piece of furniture.
5. Extract before the story becomes a wipe
The deeper layers promise better rewards but also stronger pressure from corruption and the Corrupted. Leave while the team still has a reliable route to the elevator. The enemy guide explains the threat at a high level; it does not pretend to know hidden AI values the official sources do not publish.
Solo, duo and full squad adjustments
- Solo: move slowly, keep replacement vessels in mind and prioritise a clean return over optional rooms.
- Two or three players: assign one person to watch the route while the others work the resource loop.
- Four players: spread the noise and the jobs. Do not make the whole team stand beside the same object or chase the same reward.
